Whether or not you like Phish, the defense of their music sounds familiar to any Deadhead.

Not a big fan and a big reason is that I thought Trey was a pompous ass. Maybe he still is but I'm glad to see he came around awhile back and got back together with them and is touring as a band (Phish) instead of his Trey and friends. I think that's a good thing for the fan base.

I don't know if you are trying to imply the "tapes" aren't out there so we can't listen but ... http://tela.sugarmegs.org/alpha/p.html ..there are a ton there and a boatload on etree, youtube, etc. Every show is taped just like the Dead.

The LMA provides no information for missing collections of bands like Phish, Hot Tuna, Asleep At The Wheel and other very popular bands that do not allow any of their tapes here - and / or - they do not allow taping at all.

The LMA could create a blank page, inserted as a placeholder, for each one of the above bands. Put the information you cited (for example) on these band's (non)collection pages. And state, "We don't allow any taping"; or, "Attention Tapers and Fans - the only live music taping we allow to be shared digitally are bit torrents of AUDs from eTree's web site." This suggestion would help everyone, but it might come across as the LMA making these bands "look bad" - just my two cents, so this will probably never happen. I don't stray too far from The Archive for my live music downloads.

All these other "tape-sharing" sites are out there... yes. Remember Napster, and when their patrons were getting sued for downloading mp3s, and then they got shut down? (It's true a lot of their stuff was copyrighted material that was being ripped from CDs.)

"When Napster told the district court that it had developed a technology to block the transfer of 99.4 percent of identified infringing material, the district court told council for Napster 99.4 percent was not good enough. Napster had to push the infringements 'down to zero.' If 99.4 percent is not good enough", Lessig concluded, "then this is a war on file-sharing technologies, not a war on copyright infringement."

The Archive and the LMA is probably the safest and most copyright-safe way to upload, download, and share music and multimedia files legitimately on the internet. Permitting AUDs for taping and sharing is a great way for bands to go. Fans get a sense of the band's music, how their PA system usually sounds, what they "do" when playing live at shows, how their setlists vary from show to show, and what the crowd reactions are by "putting you in there".

Perhaps my thinking is a bit old-school and old-fashioned - like an old Deadhead. YouTube is a good source for lots of Phish, as you mentioned. Lot's of GD is there also. Very often, however, the lossy Audio tracks in their clips leaves a lot to be desired. Mostly I use the LMA's lossless audio for listening to AUDs.

It's not a big deal to me. I'm just putting in my two cents.

He doesn't help his cause by some of his comments about Beatle lyrics Since when is "I Am the Walrus" a silly song ? The lyrics, in context of the song are sinister !
Pablum like "Let it Be" (which Phish quotes !) ? I bet the band would be pretty fuckin' happy to have written those songs ! Event the least of those songs is a well know song that stay with you, even if you don't like it. This is a bad thing to bring up with Phish, as that is NOT one of their strengths . Just like tightness, was not the Dead's strong suit for most of their career .
I like Phish, but not for memorable songs . If you come to them for that, you will be disappointed .
I have friends who grudgingly respect the Dead, but it is real hard to get people to give even modest respect for Phish, which is unfair .

I agree. How absurd to suggest that Phish's song wringing skills are anywhere in the same league as the Beatles. Not that the Beatles ever wrong bad songs (of course they did), but to say that Let it Be is a "cheesy" song!? I couldn't read past that point.

Exactly my point . You instantly send away the people you are trying to convince . Everyone can have their opinion ( there are people on the forum who don't like St. Stephen, or Dark Star ), but you shut doors by insulting much beloved songs There is a point to be made that Phish's songs are better than their reputation, but I think in their case, it would be better to go to their strengths like their improvisations . I think judging Phish by song writing, would be like judging the Beatles by their improvisational abilities ...
One of the things about the Grateful Dead,is that they, could jam, AND write pretty good, soulful songs , rare indeed .

"Maybe so and maybe not
Was it for this my life I sought?"

Listen to that refrain a few times as a dark mantra, and it'll drive empty chills which is the point. Many different styles and performers can all ignite the same Zen glow and warm chest cavity assurance of our life. I could make a long, unnecessary list of others, spanning genres. Suffice it to say, that many genre "masters" can bring us to "that place." And, yes, obviously, if chocolate cake makes you sick, you shouldn't eat it. And, elusive, circumnavigatory lyrics aren't going to win over the "immediate hook" crowd, either. There are many other fish in the sea folks, "believe it if you need it, / if you don't just pass it on."

Sounds like a phish story. Who cares?
Let the music play......
Who is Liberace? and why does he follow me around?

Most intelligent post on this 'subject' mid-maine thus far,
or maybe ever. I like Phish, but I never listen to them.
Phish food for thought. (did I make the pun quota?)
To itch their own
Let the music play......

Doesn't the fact that they have to be defended speak for itself?

WOW - Just went back and read the article all the way through very carefully ...
Did he write this trying to get someone to like them the way he does?
That is the absolute worst thing anyone can do ...
music is sooooo subjective and to call someone a snob because they don't like what you do is an extremely narrow minded view of the world.

The title of the article says it all ...
"Dephending Phish: It's Not Them, It's You"

Really? You don't know me ...

This is why I don't care for Phish - or their phans ...

I like Phish and see no reason to defend them. Same with GD.

...and one could, in what has been proven time again to be a nearly-hopeless pursuit, "defend" BOTH of these bands in an attempt to broaden another human's horizons. But why? Just love the tunes and let the Bieber sheep graze in their meadow of oblivion.

So we agree...

"That is the absolute worst thing anyone can do ..."

Uh, yep. The worst Jerry.
